The Love-Bug (car) Ring for Vintage Stuff Friday
Okay, I know I missed Friday. But I got absorbed in a Slam Poetry Workshop at the Missouri Literary Festival on Friday, so I didn’t post this little car-ring I’ve been wanting to show you.
I got it an a little shop in Mexico near our hotel when we were there last March. At first the guy who owns the shop wasn’t very friendly, but I was fascinated by his collection of retro, vintage and antique silver jewelry. (I’m not sure if those terms overlap, so just threw them all in there to be sure.)
Anyway, he had lots of really old-looking stuff, some stuff that looked like the 40′s, some that looked like the 60′s… Since most of the charms, bracelets and rings were small, everything was in cases and we had to ask him to get each one out. As our enthusiasm for the pieces showed, he started to tell us about the dates and histories of the different styles and how it related to Mexican history.
When I found this little Volkswagon bug ring, he said, “Oh yeah, there were lots of those made because we were all driving them in those days.” I’d never seen a ring like this — the little car slides around the ring which I think is so clever!
What a great find! Honestly, why aren’t there more fun rings like this with movable parts and cute little gimmicks? It seems like this is a niche that more people could get into. Thanks for sharing it with us.
That is so COOL! My daughter would love that ring. They should make cool stuff like that today.
LOVE the ring – didn’t see that when we were in Mexico last spring – that must have been a day you broke from the rest of us and explored great places on your own. I love the fact that the bug slides around the ring – so clever. I have to go back – I lost my bracelet where the guy carved “Rotary” into the metal.
My father had two bugs. He also had the idiot guide to repair them (alot). I love that the ring circles around.
Thanks for the all comments, I didn’t realize so many people would have memories of the car itself. I always wanted one, but didn’t know anyone who had a bug to even give me ride!
That is so cool! I have fond memories of stuffing ourselves into our VW bug like a clown car. What fun!

I recall, ever so fondly, being “stuffed” with the family dog into the back of my mother’s VW bug whenever she went out.
